How to download, install, and configure Eclipse IDE for Java development

Welcome to the second tutorial in our JAVA series and here I will cover how you can download, install, and configure Eclipse IDE on your machine. In this tutorial series we will cover the java concepts using Eclipse so in case if you are new to JAVA programming, I would recommend to use Eclipse for your Java development but feel free to use any of the other popular IDEs like NetBeans, RAD, JDeveloper, IntelliJ IDEA, etc. Alright, let’s get it started !!

  1. Click on following link to perform a Google search: Download Eclipse
  2. Most probably you’ll end up on following page: http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
  3. Download the appropriate Eclipse IDE for Java developers as per your environment [Win/Mac/Linux]
  4. Extract the archive file[zip/tar.gz] and launch the executable file name ‘eclipse’ from within the extracted directory
  5. Please specify a local workspace folder path where eclipse should store all of your projects

  6. Add Installed JDK in Eclipse: Go to: Windows>>Preferences>>Java>>Installed JREs>>

  7. Set Perspective to Java: Go to: Windows>>Open Perspective>>Other..>>Select Java
  8. Display Console Tab: Go to: Windows>>Show View>>Select Console
  9. Create a new JAVA Project:
    • Go to Package Explorer frame [left], right click and create a new Java project

    • Name your project, select “use default JRE” and click next >>next>>finish
